From the academic year 2023-24, we are delighted to offer the new Masters course OperaLab in cooperation with the IOA - International Opera Academy in Gent. Our Bachelor and Masters programmes already offer extensive training and performance opportunities in opera and concert repertoire. This course offers extra musical coaching, actors' training and movement classes to those wishing to deepen their development in operatic repertoire even further.

The performance department of the Ghent School of Arts - Conservatory 0f Music offers a balanced programme of performance classes and academic courses for promising singers. A broad range of opportunities in recital, chamber music, orchestral concerts, and opera, provide the rich experiences vital to the development of singing and acting skills at the core of the singer's craft. Lessons include work on vocal technique, interpretation, diction, text analysis, chamber music, movement, improvisation and acting. All students have the opportunity to participate in Masterclasses. Students perform in opera scenes with piano, and in a fully staged production with chamber orchestra. Alexander Technique sessions are available for interested students.

Opera Project
Each year the School of Arts mounts a fully staged opera. Initiated in 2006 by Gidon Saks, the annual project is performed with the School of Arts Chamber Orchestra led by Guy Penson, Andrew Wise, Daan Janssens, Michel Tilkin, Florian Heyerick and Matteo Pirola. Past operas include l'Incoronazione di Poppea, Dido and Aeneas, Die Fledermaus (Act 2), Mitridate, Così fan tutte, The Turn of the Screw, The Medium, and Offenbach's La Fourchette - a new pastiche opera. Costumes, set design and lighting are created in collaboration with other departments of the Gent School of Arts or with students from other schools. In addition, opera scenes are also staged.

Chamber music and concerts
The School of Arts offers many collaborative opportunities.
The chamber music programme allows a thorough exploration of chamber music repertoire of various styles and periods. Past performances include works such as Schütz's Geistliche Konzerte, Bach's Missa Brevis, Magnificat and Coffee Cantata, Ravel's Chansons Madecasses, Schubert's Der Hirt auf dem Felsen, Schumann's Spanisches Liederspiel, Spohr's Sechs Deutsche Lieder, Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire, Ginastera's Cantos del Tucumán, songs by Luciano Berio, André Previn, Lucien Posman, ...
Concert projects led by Mireille Capelle, Hendrickje Van Kerckhove, and Marcos Pujol, have included a Schubertiade, a concert of music by Flemish composers, a Maeterlinck concert, a staged concert of the "Miryzaal composers", and this year an English Song concert as well as Sang Couleur - a staged concert with Belgian songs on the theme of war.
Every year selected students perform as soloists with the conservatory orchestra led by Dirk Brossé. Past concerts have included arias and ensembles by Mozart, Donizetti, Puccini, and Korngold.
In 2011, the conservatories of Gent ,Tilburg and Maastricht teamed up for an orchestral concert which included Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen sung by Cathy van Roy (M.Mus, 2011) under the baton of Michael Tabachnik.

Masterclasses
2012-13
Between performances as Pelléas at La Monnaie in Brussels, Yann Beuron came to work with our singers on Mozart and French repertoire. Canadian soprano Lyne Fortin focused on vocal technique.
Other past guests include : tenor Michael Spyres; mezzo Jennifer Hamilton from the DIT Conservatorium in Dublin; soprano Soon Cho from Baylor College; Italian lyric diction specialist Ubaldo Fabbri from Pesaro, Gabriele Micheli who gave classes on Italian recitativo, and Gidon Saks (bass-baritone, teacher, director) on technique and repertoire.
Languages
Dutch is the language of instruction for all academic courses at the bachelor level. Foreign students must meet certain minimum requirements. The language of choice for practical courses may vary depending on student preference. At the graduate level, students may opt for a Masters in English, with no Dutch language requirements.
The multilingual singing faculty regularly teaches in Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish or Italian.
Encounters at the conservatory often lead to participation in projects in Belgium and Europe, for example :
- collaborations with Muziektheater Transparant, LOD, NTG, ...
- projects with Belgian composers : Frank Nuyts, Dominique Pauwels, Daan Janssens, Benjamin Lyke, ...
- participation in projects at the International Opera Academy (formerly : Vlaamse Opera Studio)
- concerts with Arte Vocale - De Schone Lier
- summer operas at the York Trust in Norfolk
- summer operas at the Aberdeen Festival, Scotland
